Pleasant Days: Play Date
There was someone on top of him. He hated waking up because of someone, if he had to be woken up, it better be to fool around. A horrible day could always be prevented, by being woken up right. He threw the woman’s limbs off him, waking her up in the process. Adele, or was it Kelly? Whoever she was, she quickly threw on clothes and left the room.
Bemused, Daniel watched the woman slam out the door and out the house. It was too bad all his women couldn’t follow this one’s actions. There was no need for fake or unpleasant chitchat. The woman still left him in a bad mood. It was the morning, and she had him excited. He wasn’t a horn dog, but he hated cold showers.
It was late in the morning, and Mary-Sue had probably left. The past two months had been horrible. Daniel had to be honest with himself. He had been stupid. He had gambled with his team, and had been put on suspension, he was in hot water, and things were going downhill pretty fast. His gambling had put them in financial trouble, and even if he couldn’t call himself broke, he wasn’t able to keep the lifestyle they had before. It had meant a new change in residence, and neighborhood. There was some silver lighting on things though, his wife was furious, and that was a constant source of delight.
Mary-Sue wrapped up the meeting with her coworkers. It hadn’t come as a surprise, after their company had merged with another. They had known there was going to be some lay offs, and there had been, so they had hoped their department would not be affected, but they been wrong.
Mary-Sue looked at Catherine, the woman was furious. Catherine wasn’t losing her job, but it worried her to know that her daughter was graduating this may, without a job offer, and none anywhere in the next few months. Clark took it in stride, he had landed a job two weeks before, so he had nothing to worry.
She left the building for the last time, that night, depressed. Daniel didn’t know of the lay off; they never talked so they didn’t share, but she knew he would be mad, even though he had no right to be.
She drove away from the building in a hurry. They were to meet Bella at the church in an hour. Mary-Sue didn’t feel like going, but she couldn’t disappoint the woman. At the moment, she needed all the friends she had. They were able to make it to the church in time to see everyone arrive, but the time together alone caught them in a fight.
Mary-Sue didn’t know what he’d been doing the entire day, but the smell of perfume on him gave her an idea.
”This’ a church, do you know that? Why do it today, it happens everyday, but why do it today?” Why today of all days? She was on the verge of crying, but forced the tears back. She wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction of knowing he got to her. Still why today? Didn’t he know what the day was, where they were standing?
”That hand’s gonna end up limp, if you don’t put it down” Daniel warned quietly as his wife continued to rant. Mary-Sue quickly dropped the hand. Before their marriage had soured, she would have never believed that Daniel would lay violent hand on her, but now, she wasn’t too sure. There had been close calls, but he always pulled back. She was angry at him, but she knew not to raise his temper.
Daniel smiled sardonically as his wife pulled down her hand. He could see the fire sparking in her eyes, and wished she would go through with the threat evident on her face. She really was no fun.
”Why are you getting so mad for? Because it’s our anniversary?” Daniel chuckled when her mood darkened. She was so easy to read, that was one of the things he found desirable about her…and so easy to manipulate. “Why don’t you do it? Who knows, I might find it exciting” He indicated at her clenched fist. It wasn’t a lie. He wished she would try hitting him. He wasn’t sure if he would leave her unscathed, but it was an exciting thought.
Mary-Sue pulled herself together. The look in his eyes sent chills down her spine, and his smile sent her trembling. She wasn’t going to be goaded into doing something so foolish, regardless of her strong desire to do it. He knew it was their anniversary, meaning he had been with another woman on purpose to infuriate her. Really…he could be too cruel.
The others started arriving, cutting off their argument.
Daniel started down the bridge to meet Michael. He stopped, turned and gave her a smile, “You look sexy tonight…”. Mary-Sue felt a warm tingle spread through her at those words. God, she really hated him. She hated how miserable he made her, and how much a few nice words from him, made her hear summersault.
Mary-Sue watched her husband walk away, and cursed the day she met him.
